Mental Health Matters: Honoring National Mental Health Awareness Month

Every May, we take time to honor National Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to reflect, connect, and speak more openly about the emotional and psychological challenges many of us face.

Mental health isn’t something that lives in the background. It’s part of our daily lives—how we show up at work, how we engage in relationships, how we care for ourselves, and how we process the world around us. And yet, for many, mental health can feel like something to manage in silence.

This month is a reminder: You are not alone.

The Numbers Tell a Story

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year. But beyond statistics are real people—friends, coworkers, parents, teenagers—navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and more.

Mental health struggles are not signs of weakness. They’re part of being human.

What Can We Do This Month?

1. Start Conversations Whether it’s with a friend, coworker, or therapist, opening up about how you're feeling can be powerful.

2. Learn & Share Resources Educate yourself and others. Share mental health support numbers, recommend therapy-friendly spaces, and advocate for accessible care.

3. Practice Self-Compassion You don’t have to be “productive” all the time. Rest, boundaries, and asking for help are essential forms of care.

4. Consider Therapy Therapy isn’t just for crisis—it's a space for growth, understanding, and healing. Whether you’re managing stress or exploring deeper emotional wounds, working with a therapist can be transformative.

You Deserve Support

If you're struggling or simply seeking more balance in your life, therapy can offer a safe, nonjudgmental place to start. During this Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage you to reach out—whether it’s to a therapist, a trusted friend, or a community group.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Let’s keep the conversation going—not just this month, but all year long.
